The gym backpack is the bag for a day that starts at a desk and ends at a squat rack. The laptop rides in a padded sleeve against the back panel, where the bag is stiffest and where the American Academy of Pediatrics tells a school child to put the heaviest thing in a pack. The shoes go in a compartment at the bottom with ventilation holes, sealed off from the rest, so the trainers and the laptop share a bag without sharing air. Between them the forty-litre body takes a change of clothes and a towel with room over.

The two sizes differ only in the sleeve: 15.6 inches on one, 17.3 on the other, with the body, the shoe bay, the padded straps and the anti-theft pocket on the back the same on both. The pocket on the back sits between the bag and your spine when the bag is worn, which is where a phone and a wallet go on a train. A strap on the back slides over a suitcase handle, so the backpack rides on a rolling bag through an airport, and the whole outside is water-resistant polyester with covered zips.
